Acorns & bud cluster

Text Box: All oaks are either in the red oak “family” or the white oak “family”. There are dozens of oaks in each family. Around DFW a good way to tell the families apart is to look closely at the leaf (lobes) tips. Oaks in the red oak family will have a tiny portion of their leaf vein sticking out the end of the leaf. White oaks do not have this feature and their lobes are usually rounded.
Red oaks above include Shumard, Texas and Blackjack. Bur oak and Post oak are both white oaks.
Why is this important? For one thing it helps in identification. Also, white oaks are resistant to oak wilt disease here in Texas.
